What was the Praetorian Guard?
Any takers? Be sure to give me an e-mail so I can contact you and get your mailing address.

wasn't the praetorian guard under the direct protection and orders from the emperor? (dont know if i spelled that right)
Anon, close, but not quite right.
The Praetorian Guard was a group of soldiers that was originally created as a personal protection to the ceasar. Under Augustus though, the praetorian guard gained some political power that would eventually grow. They soon were able to elect or destroy emperors. Because of their might, they were able to go over the Senate and elect Claudius on the throne of the empire after assassinating Caligula. The last emperor the guard was associated with was Maxentius, whose son, after Maxentius's death, was elected emperor by the Praetorians. They soon were destroyed by Constantine.
Very good, Charlie
